Attending An Inter-Disciplinary.Net Conference

Whether you are a first time attendee or an experienced hand you will know that attending a conference arranged by Inter-Disciplinary.Net is not like any other conference. Our aim is two-fold; to facilitate the most conducive atmosphere to begin and continue dialogue and to make them as truly inter, multi and trans-disciplinary as possible. As such we have a framework in place that we feel is suited to promoting theseĀ  particular aspects and below you will find examples of the most frequently asked questions that we receive.

  • What Should I Wear?

At Inter-Disciplinary.Net events we ask that you leave your names and titles at the door. In the conference space we are all simply people exchanging ideas and engaging in dialogue. As such power-dressing is not required but what ever form of dress you feel comfortable in is perfectly acceptable.

  • Can I Something Other Than Present a Paper?

Yes. Although presenting a paper is the traditional approach we also encourage performances, recitals, workshops, presentations of works in progress, inter-active engagements and anything else that explores and opens dialogues in and around the theme of the Project that you are wanting to be part of. We do ask though that you remember that not everyone present will be an expert in your field or area of interest so points of easier access or explination are always a good idea.

  • 20 Minutes Does Not Seem Very Long For A Presentation?

Remember, your presentation is not meant as the last word on the subject or idea that you are expressing at the conference. Rather it is the start, or continuation, of a dialogue. We find that 20 minutes allows enough time to get an idea across and allow for time afterwards for other delegates to engage in dialogue with your work and those of your fellow presenters. However we also know that certain types of presentation/performance do require slightly longer and in which case we ask that you contact the respective Project Leader to discuss how best to facilitate this.

  • Are Power Point Presentations Really Banned From The Conference?

Yes. That is Power Point presentations that consist of large amounts of text and fancy graphic effects are not allowed. Inter-Disciplinary.Net events are neither a classroom or lecture hall for the technologically proficient to show off their skills or for the unimaginative to repeat verbatim huge amounts of script that everyone else in the room can read for themselves — They are about dialogue in and around an idea as put forward by you, the presenter. We do have data projectors available to show images and clips or other image rich presentations or slides of work but please tell us beforehand so that we can make sure that everything is there ready for you.

These are just a few of the wide range of questions that arise so if yours is not answered here please do not hesitate to contact either the Project Email of the conference your are planning on attending or the particular Project Leader. these emails can be found on the respective Call for Papers pages on the website.
