Hi Teresa and everyone,

I suggest you watch this interview with Slavok Zizek and Tariq Ramadan, it can fuel debate on he actual meaning of multiculturalism and universalism and how both (in my view) should not be mutually exclusive. And it adds beautifully to what teresa says about human interconenctedness

All the best, especially to the Egyptian people

Hi everyone
Joining in the debate from Lisbon. Antonio is so right. Having spent a short period of time in Egypt, what strikes me is how we really structure communalities and senses of belonging in contrast with how we think we do it. I remember talking to people of the same age group, or the same gender and background and finding so much more in common with Egyptions than with the people next door. Besides our common humanity and interdependence, we seem ourselves to be so plural, each one of us able to find bridges with a variety of people that are. like us, equally plural and unexplained by one single categorization be it age, gender, religion, ethnicity etc. Finding yourself so atunned to someone whom you thought iwere different and who see themselves as different is a discovery and a joy. It also defines what Amatya Sen I think call the identity imperialism, ie the notion that we can be defined by one of our many available categories of belonging.
So a big hug to all, especially to our Egyptian colleagues who are trying for something different with such passion.

Dear all,
I feel we are witnessing historical changes in the Arab world. Few words can add to or describe what's happening as all events present themselves very clearly: in Egypt there is manipulated mass or hidden interest, the events are so clear that any attempt at manipulation or misinterpretation looks overtly ridiculous. the people are fed up and are taking to the streets because they want dignity. As I said in the conference, beyond our cultural differences, there are transcultural signifiers that are so much powerful: mostly everybody in every part of the world desires to live in in peace and dignity. This is what unites most people beyond cultural or national differences, however good, positive and necessary differences are. If immigrants have good access to decent housing and have the same oppportunities as locals integration becomes a bit easier. If immigrant narratives are included as part of the national narrative then a sense of belonging and inclusiveness is much easier to articulate. If marginalised citizens have opprtunities to lead a normal life, then violence and riots will not make that much sense. This is what i think, I hope it ignites some debate although i think it is pretty obvious :)

Hi Heather,

we are at bit of a cross-roads at the moment: the last few months have been spent preparing to separate out the publishing activities we do from the conferencing activities we do so they don't get lost in each other on the same site! It means that all the publishing work is moving to a new and dedicated site which is coming to the end of beta-testing at which point we'll be transferring all the ebooks across to the new site.

You can see what is presently listed on the main site by going here:
http://www.inter-disciplinary.net/publishing/id-press/
and following the eBooks link.

You can take a look at the new dedicated publishing site by going here:
https://www.interdisciplinarypress.net/
but as I say - it is coing to the end of beta testing and none of the eBooks have been ported across yet. We hope to have it done by the end of March/early April.

Warmly,

Rob
