One Day Workshop – Getting Your Message Across: Storytelling for researchers and other professionals

September 6 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

| £85.00

In this one day workshop we reflect on some perennial problems for authors writing about research and other professional matters, especially when they are writing for an inter-disciplinary audience. The workshop is aimed at authors writing about matters of importance. However, we will focus, especially, on what makes for a ‘good read’ in writing about professional and academic research, by addressing the question of what makes a research report; an outline for a funding proposal; an academic article, or a policy statement accessible to a wide audience. We will also consider the question of what makes an abstract inviting and exciting, whether it is an abstract for a conference presentation, a professional or academic article, or a PhD thesis.

Our intention is to offer support to writers at all levels in developing an engaging style that communicates clearly, by conveying complex information as simply as possible. We will invite participants to abandon the idea (if they have it, and many people do) that difficult ideas can only be conveyed using complex language, big and important sounding words. We will suggest that instead they should think of their writing as a species of storytelling that aims to engage, inform and challenge.

The workshop will include opportunities for reflection about what makes for successful professional writing, and for the sharing of problems with writing and of ‘hot tips’ for writers. Alongside these things we will present some of the reasons that we believe storytelling has a lot to offer authors who want to write clearly and engagingly about important matters, and invite participants to engage in practical activities aimed at developing ideas and skills. We hope and expect that the workshop will be of interest to many participants in the 8th Global meeting of the Storytelling Project, which we are chairing from 3rd – 5th September 2015, just before this workshop. Since, at the heart of our view that storytelling is useful for researchers and professional authors of all kinds, is the importance for the author of empathising with the audiences for whom they are writing, we also anticipate that it will be of interest to participants in the 2nd Global meeting of the Empathy Project, which we are chairing from 7th – 9th September, 2015.
